COMPETITION

COMPETITION:

I knew before picking my brief that i wanted to do an animation. Because i enjoyed doing it last year as my final piece and it is a field i want to know more about. So when i found the WETRANSFER brief it just felt like the obvious choice.

This term Ive been focusing on improving my digital skills so i decided to make the animation using vector illustrations. I spent a lot of time just thinking about myself and who i wanted to be in 10 years. Sketching at the same time. After a few days i started to draw this landscape that was some type of safe haven for me and my creativity.  Drawing up a simple storyboard about a man meditating at the top of a mountain surrounded  with foxes and owls.

Meeting with Luke helped a lot since he gave me a lot of good ideas on what to focus on.

In the end i have made a film where a man is struggling with his art and we enter his imagination and follows a fox climbing this landscape eventually reaching the top revealing this as a piece of art the same man has made in the future.

The fantasy land is based on things that inspire me. So its very video game influenced.

To me this film is a hope that i will get more secure with my creativity but also stay my childish and colorful self.

Also the film Isn't completely finished but i am going to keep working on it until the deadline for the competition.

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL:

A quick thinking project. It was a lot of fun to do and i discovered some new ways of making imagery.

I used only vector illustration for this one as it is something that i wanted to become better at and it fitted the brief very nicely.

The first piece is for the article about the differences of the rich and poor. The part about it that caught my eye was the high number of homeless students in American schools. So my piece is of homework being done in an alley. Cause where do you do your homework if you don´t have a home?

The other piece was about a man and his digital addiction to his ipad, describing how an ocean of calm running over him as he flips through apps and buzzfeed pages. So an image of an ipad being a swimming pool popped up in my head during the workshop. I was thinking about what made me calm like that. My answer is swimming, Im never as calm as when Im diving under water.
Here is my final piece:

REPORTAGE

REPORTAGE:

I struggled a lot with this project. Mostly because reportage drawing seems so vast so in the beginning i couldn't really figure out what it was to me.

After the first workshop having been to Elephant and castle i was even more unsure. I spent some time walking around in Deptford where i live and decided to focus on that area. The reason was that in Deptford gentrification is having a quick uprising and a lot of interesting stories on the subject appeared.

My final piece is a reportage comic that focuses on the events sorrounding the opening of the pub called "The job centre" Opening in the same place as the Jobcentre that had to close down a few years before. Making the locals saying it felt like a slap in the face. The final piece is supposed to be a double spread in a magazine.

I had a fever during this period so most of my research is based on people ive seen on the street and youtube clips about the subject.

Here are some research sources:

FILM

I was really excited about this project because i enjoy editing and filming. In the workshop where we decided titles i ended up picking the title BRAVE PEOPLE KISS. I relate a lot to that title because i know what it feels like to be ashamed of you emotions towards other people.

After researching about the gay rights movement in America i decided to focus on the events around stonewall making a video collage showing the bravery of the people that dared to show their love in public despite being prosecuted. I used found black and white photos that i colored in digitally to put more attention to the people in the gay rights movement.

A fun project, made me improve my skills in premiere and a completely new way of working for me.

FICTION

FICTION:

I picked the story what have you done by Ben Marcus. Mostly because the emotions about coming back to your hometown after a long time resembled how i feel about going home. So i spent two weeks in my hometown in the north drawing the scenery. I was planning on using these drawing as reference for the backdrop as i thought it is a depressing town deserving this story.

But when we got back after summer and i got the actual brief of what we were going to do i changed my mind. So in my actual final pieces i didn´t actually use any on the research i had collected. Instead i focused on Paul (The main character) and his relationship with his mother and sister. Slowly showing more of Paul himself as the images passes through the story. As a reference for Paul i used Philip Seymour Hoffman in the movie happiness.

Final pieces in ink and colors and textures added in photoshop.
